CHAPTER 12

“ABOUT TIME YOU got here.” Patrea whipped the door open before I could knock. “I’ve got something to show you.”

I followed her inside, expecting to learn the finer points of applying a French polish, or maybe she’d found another secret cupboard. Not that the last one had offered anything interesting. Instead, Patrea led me upstairs to the attic space where she’d set up a murder board with photos of Davina and Delilah: notes and clippings about each woman with several red strings stretched between those in patterns that didn’t make sense to me at first glance.

“It’s not done, obviously.” Patrea watched my face for signs of what I thought of her handiwork. “But I thought a visual representation of the facts might help nail down our suspects.”

I walked closer, saw she’d pinned strips of blank paper to the lower left-hand corner, and hung a marker from one of the red strings.

“Here at the top, I’ve put Davina on the left, Delilah on the right,” Patrea explained her system. “The red string represents the timeline for both murders, and I figured we could write the suspect’s names on those pieces of paper, tack them along the bottom, and then use this to make connections between them.” She produced a ball of blue string. “Maybe we’ll see a pattern emerge.”

“I’ve been spinning my wheels so long with this one, I’m willing to try anything. Davina has finally realized she made an enemy but can’t think of who it could be. We all agree that whoever killed one woman also killed the other. Delilah’s certain it’s someone who lives in town, but I think the answer lies in Davina’s past cases.”

“What if you’re both right?”

I frowned since I hadn’t considered that angle before. “Don’t you think Davina would know if she’d run into someone from her hometown when she was elsewhere? Or if someone from here carried that big of a grudge? I’d have thought she’d pick right up on that. Open and shut.”

Or not.

“I meant, what if someone from Davina’s past, someone who had something to do with one of her cases, moved here recently.”

Why didn’t I think of that before?

“We have had a few transplants over the past few months. I figured they resulted from Martha’s tireless efforts to bring attention, but you’re absolutely right. Someone connected to her could have moved to town, and now, I wish Davina was here. I have questions.”

“She’s not?” Patrea glanced around just in case the ghost was standing right behind her. “I’m not sure how all of that works, but if you want to call her, it’s okay with me.”

“They mostly just show up whenever they want.” Whether I liked it or not. “But sometimes they come if I call them. Here goes.” I raised my voice. “Davina. Can you hear me?”

“That’s lame,” Patrea muttered.

“What? Were you expecting me to whip out a crystal ball or a scrying mirror?”

“No, I guess not. But how cool would it be if you had a crystal ball?”

“She’d probably drop it on her foot,” Davina spoke to Patrea, not to me.
